How to Become a Website Designer

Posted on: May 15th, 2013 by imaginationprint

The whole world is on-line now so a great place to look for a career is right there. One of the best could be in actually designing the websites that billions of people visit daily. With so much traffic there is an obvious demand, but exactly what do you need to do in order to become a website designer?

The first thing you need to do when thinking about becoming a website designer is to understand exactly what it is that a website designer actually does. Basically, a website designer is responsible for the visuals that you see on the page. This includes the colors, the formatting, the layout, and the font amongst many other things. For these reasons alone it is preferably for any website designer to have a strong grasp of style and design. If you are not at all creative, this might not be the best job for you.

Once you have understood the basics of what would be needed of you in the job, it is time to take some formal training. The first port of call should be a basic HTML course which will show you how to build a simple website, step by step. This will probably be the time when you get introduced to other staple basics such as Flash and JavaScript. Things get more technical here than design based and it is probably a bit more complicated than just the quick clicks that you expected, but it is during this period that you learn the building blocks that will form the basis of your future career.

Once you have got the basics nailed, you will need to show the world what you have learn. A lot of people have jumped on the website designer bandwagon so you need to stand out from the crowd. You are unlikely to get a job straight out of training so it is essential that you set up your own website so that you have evidence to show potential employers exactly what it is that you can do.

Once you have wowed somebody with your own website, it will be time to decide exactly who you want to work for in this world. A website designer usually has two main options; to work for a large company that specializes in web design, or to try and go freelance. The two options have their own benefits but for somebody starting out in this world, the better option is probably for you to find work with a well respected and established company. Here you will be able to build on the strong foundations you have already laid for yourself, and you will also be giving yourself more options for if you turn freelance later on when you are producing the best web design in the whole of Sydney!

Good luck!
